I enjoyed reading this piece. Thank you for sharing.

I was reading a book recently where the author quoted, "the follower of Jesus is not like an infant crying loudly for his mother's breast, but like a weaned child that quietly rests by his mother's side, happy in being with her. No desire now comes between him and his God, for he is sure that God knows what he needs before he asks him. And just as the child gradually breaks off the habit of regarding his mother, only as a means of satisfying his own desires and learns to love her for her own sake, so the worshipper, after a struggle, has reached an attitude of mind in which he desires God for himself, and not as a means of fulfillment for his own wishes."

This piece reminded me of the quote.

Hello DeeDee, I'm glad you drew so much value.

I'm curious what's the book title?

Expand full comment

It's The Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson but he quoted Artur Weiser in The Psalms.

this is a rich piece.

shittu, i’m curious, why do you think this is the case in india ??

Thank you Tobi, interesting how I went 4-5 straight rounds of jollof-writes yesterday. you're good with your words, my friend.

honestly, i'm equally as curious as you are. I came across it while studying for this piece and i thought "wow, that's something." it might be that their concept of marriages and divorce differs from ours.

well, it is a fact worth exploring

I promise you I didn't air that first paragraph. I somehow forgot I read it. I appreciate the love Shittu. Thank you.

You're a badass writer, yourself.

honestly, man. I’m not promising i’ll google it but i’ll ask my indian friend about it. He always has some interesting and passionate thoughts especially when it comes to his people.

I can't wait to hear from

So, I finally got an answer.

The reason they have low divorce rates is because of the shame of splitting up. There's a huge shame culture against it and so they would rather stay in bondage and broken marriages without actually filing for divorces. if that makes sense?

do you have anything contrary?

Yeah, that's what I found out too. I think that is burdensome but it gives voice to the idea that one should check well and be sure before getting married.

You know what's funny? the day I told you I was going to find out about the divorce thing, the next day, I and a couple of my brothers met in my pastor's house, and coincidentally, the topic of marriage and relationship came up.

The Indian thing also slipped into the conversation. It felt like God orchestrated the purpose of that meeting to clarify that question for me.

i think i have another question but it’s not fully formed yet. Let me read this piece again and maybe that’ll help.

Alright then, I am all ears

Expand full comment

i guess, my only question would be, what inspired you to write this? are you in a relationship? have you ever been in one? did you ever get heartbroken?

Expand full comment

Well, it might sound cliché but I'm in a relationship with God and we have had our ups and downs, well the downs' are mostly from me. So this was a result of that relationship.
